Simon Free will be demonstrating how to hook up an AIR Application using a ColdFusion back end. He'll also be discussing best-practices for structuring the code that AIR communicates with.

Simon works at Nylon Technology as a Senior Developer and Lead Engineer on several high profile projects. These range from a start-up athlete skin care shopping cart application to a full blown CMS requiring multiple workflows for publishing and editing several types of content, to messaging and event management requiring the integration of a variety of different technologies including ColdFusion, Flex, InDesign, Air and Blaze DS / LiveCycle DS. Constantly learning, Simon is always looking for new challenges and presents those discoveries at different usergroups and conferences.

MUCHO THANKS TO ALL!

I would like to personally thank everyone who attended, as well as presented at, the 360 Flex Camp - NJ this past weekend.  This was the first event of this type for NJFlex, and I couldn't have done it without the help from the guys at 360 Conferences.

Considering all the positive feedback that I've received, I guarantee more events like this will follow. Over the next few days, I'll be updating this site with Photos (if anyone has photos of the event... please shoot me a link), and presentation files as they become available.

JavaFX and Flex how do we compare?
I would be curious to find out how others view the platforms, especially from the standpoint of external application developers, but having been on the inside of both of these projects, here are some points of comparison. I’m attempting to be objective here and just point out some of the areas to consider. But since I used to work at Sun on Java/JavaFX and now work on the Flex team at Adobe you should filter appropriately.

Adobe's Flex Builder to woo Microsoft C# developers
Alchemy translates C/C++ into ActionScript 3.0 to play in Flash Player 10 and AIR 1.5. One possible application: Bringing over games authored in C and C++ to Flash. Furthering the "come-to-Flash" message, Alchemy also lets you play Ogg Vorbis and Lib Vorbis that were previously unable to run in the Flash Player or AIR. ®

Yahoo! Launches BrowserPlus, Plans to Open Source It
After a couple of years in development, Yahoo! officially launched their BrowserPlus plugin at a party on the Yahoo! campus today. BrowserPlus is a new cross-browser plugin from Yahoo! that enables what they’re called “in-browser desktop applications,” which is a fancy way of saying that it allows developers to add desktop-like functionality to web-based apps. The BrowserPlus approach is a bit different from Gears (a Google-led open source project), which is a desktop wrapper for web apps with local data store, and Adobe’s AIR, which recreates a web environment on the desktop, though there is some overlap.
